Repeat Patterns - Studio 54 inspired

After researching Studio 54 as a trend I noticed its very popular to clash bright colours and patterns for a typical Studio 54 outfit, considering this I knew I  wanted to link patterns to my Creative concept so i thought it would be useful to create my own pattern. I firstly created a collage in my sketchbook using the most common colours wore in Studio 54, aswell as including animal print and making my own abstract zebra style print. I used a variety of shapes and created this:

All my own designs and images

Original collage created in sketchbook using coloured card, magazine pages, tissue page:

I then repeated the original collage on photoshop to create this.

For this one i repeated it 4 times to still make it busy but not as full on as the one above.

I also changed and filled in the colours to make it more vibrant and to fit my theme better. Im really happy with how they turned out, especially as they're all my own work.

Final moodboard using a collage pattern:

I then used the collage as a background for one of my final moodboards for my report. I found by fading it, it looked more like a background rather than the main stand out image.

SPRZ NY

SPRZ NY is a brand new project around the concept of ''A place where clothes and art meet''. Its a special collection of modern art-inspired fashion products based on the work of the best artists around including Keith Haring and many more. I was really fascinated about this collaboration after doing research on Keith Haring Previously. So when i went to New York, i planned to visit UNIQLO, fifth avenue where the 2nd floor has been re-done for the project. The interior of this space was very bright and holographic with lots of pop-art everywhere. It was a visually creative area that really inspired me. It was interesting to see how Haring's work is in collaboration with the brand UNIQLO and gave me insight for my summative brief.

My own photographs after visiting the store:

Very vibrant, holographic store- stands out and intrigues the consumer

Playful and creative- not serious and lets the customers get involved

These are some of the products there were selling from the collection, i love that they are suitable for both male and female and for all ages. Aswell as looking like statement tops, each pattern from Harings work show off an inspiring message. His work often combines iconographic vocabulary including hearts, flying saucers, winged figures and a crawling 'Radiant Baby' with abstract marks and patterning. I actually purchased 2 t-shirts from this collection and they were both $14.90, this is very affordable considering they were such good quality.

Black Fashion Designers Exhibition

While I was in New York City I got the opportunity to visit the 'Black Fashion Designers' exhibition at FIT! Black designers have been long under-appreciated in the fashion industry; this exhibition gives credit to those who have received no recognition from all the work they have created and is a lesson in what the designers have dealt with to survive the industry. The exhibition features more than 60 designers, and includes 75 pieces created over the last 70 years. The exhibition includes a range of individual styles, categorised into themes which included Breaking into the industry, The Rise of the Black Fashion Design, Evening Wear, Street Influence, Activism, Menswear, Black Models, African Influence, and Experimentation

Own Photos from visiting the exhibition:

 African Influence
 Menswear

I really loved looking round this exhibition, every single garment was beautifully made with lots of intricate detail. It was also very inspiring that it was to help the designers gain the acknowledgment they should of got years ago. As the curators worked on the exhibition, says Way, “It became clear that the term ‘black designer’ is just a tiny facet of describing any designer. ‘Black’ doesn’t tell you anything about a designer. The exhibition is really about a diversity of perspective.”-http://www.vogue.com/13509888/fit-exhibition-black-fashion-designers/

MoMa

While i was in New York i visited the Museum of Modern Art. We went for on Friday evening as it was UNIQLO Free Friday Nights. It was my favorite museum of all the ones I visited as it had a range of work including sculptures, interiors, graphics, photography and much more. These images I took are all of pieces of work that inspired me, and I feel like could inspire me in the future for particular projects.

I found this really interesting, the booklets are very vintage and bold. Unlike popular magazines nowadays these are simple which means you can focus on what they're trying to communicate. It is also effective with using a black and white image with coloured text as it doesn't look too overpowering.

This is a wall of all individual posters, this really stood out to me due to the bright, vibrant colours and funky illustrations and patterns.

Above is the same image printed, however, they all have a different tint of colour. This reminded me of when i colour adjusted the same image to represent different moods. This shows how a image can show a different mood and situation with the use of different colours even if it is the same image.

Thank you for reading and seeing some of my photographs from MoMa.

Keith Haring Collaborations

Keith Haring and the Keith Haring foundation have done a lot of collaborations throughout the years. This inspired me for the big idea on how it’s possible to change a boring product into something more unique and inspiring- influenced by a trend (or in Haring case, his style of art). (Keith Haring Foundation- an organization that provides assistance to not-for-profit charities providing research, education related to AIDS, and resources to those affected by the disease.)

Designer Olympia Le-Tan has collaborated with the Keith Haring foundation. Offering a variety of handbags with Haring signature art on. I really love this collection as they look very stylish and bold, they are on the pricey side so not suitable for everyone, however i would love to own one as i feel like it's a piece you would keep forever. “Haring’s work is so fun and colorful. It looks naive yet it’s very political, which is why I like it so much. I thought this would be a good capsule to complement our Fall collection, Framed, which was about the art world.” - http://www.vogue.com/13461576/olympia-le-tan-keith-haring-bags/

Chloë Sevigny holding Olympia Le-Tan's new Keith Haring collection of bags.
A very popular collaboration was DKNY and the Keith Haring foundation. They feature his iconic style on the bottle and box. ‘’They’re not only visually compelling, but they communicate a message that I think everyone can relate to’’, ‘’wearable art that’s young, urban and totally original’’ – Donna Karan.

Clarisonic partnered up with the Keith Haring foundation and bought out this iconic product. ‘’We're really happy with them, and to share Keith Haring art and message of compassion with everyone’’ – Dr Robb (co-founder). This is not a product/ brand you would ever image Keith Haring’s foundation collaborating with, however it worked and went down amazingly. This is very inspiring to me as originally the product looked quite boring, however now with this design it has made way more exciting and meaningful- this is what i am trying to achieve for my big idea.

Nicholas Kirkwood- a footwear designer has collaborated with the Keith Haring Foundation
On the shoes includes Harings signature patterns, like ‘Safe Sex’ and ‘Radiant Baby’ in a bold, playful way. ''I didn’t just want to use his graphic patterns to create all-over prints as that seemed a very obvious approach, instead, I wanted the art to shape the shoes. For example, there’s one shoe that references a portrait of Andy Warhol. It was quite difficult to work out how to do it, because if we’d put the face on the front of the shoe it would have been completely distorted. Putting it onto the side of a wedge and building in a platform was the only way to do it, so the face was as flat as possible.'' “He had this fun, playful way of drawing, but there is a very serious message behind it all, like the ‘Crack is Wack’ work. Some messages are more obvious than others, but the overall simplicity of it makes it very accessible.- Nicholas Kirkwood

Toms has partnered with the Keith Haring Foundation. The collection includes three footwear styles for men and women and glasses inspired by Haring’s signature style. Toms is a very affordable brand, so it's available for a variety of people, whereas some of the more expensive examples above will only be suitable for a certain consumer; they are also very wearable.

These are a range of examples where a product has been turned into something more creative and innovative while being inspired by a style- similarly what i have to do for the Big Idea and Creative Concept. All these brands that have created a product in collaboration with the Keith Haring foundation which all look create and promote a good message and foundation. I love how they have collaborated with a range of high end and high street brands as it means a variety of consumers can get something whether they have a higher budget or lower.
